- Ability to learn new software (e.g., library research databases, cataloguing tools, library services platform)
- Knowledge of music materials in all print and electronic formats (sound recordings, musical scores, manuscripts)
- Ability to read standard music notation, familiarity with Western art music

Duties:
The University of Toronto Music Library is located inside the Faculty of Music’s Edward Johnson Building and contains the largest music research collection in Canada. We enjoy a friendly and respectful team atmosphere with a strong service orientation toward our musical community. Working collaboratively with the Music Library team, you will help create a welcoming and user-centred experience at our service desk by:
- Providing general reference and research assistance to music library patrons using the library catalogue, research databases, reference collection, and other tools
- Being responsible for opening and closing the library on rotating evening and weekend shifts with other student staff (you would never be working alone)
- Helping users sign out, renew, or return library materials
- Troubleshooting printing and basic technology issues
- Helping users locate materials in the stacks
- Supporting and providing back-up for Student Library Assistant (SLA) desk staff on evenings and weekendsWhen you aren’t assisting patrons, you will work on a variety of special projects such as: designing library displays and exhibitions (physical and digital), planning social media posts, metadata management, and data entry for collection assessment work.
This part-time role offers training and mentorship. You will have the opportunity to further develop your communication, problem-solving, and time-management skills. You’ll also acquire experience working in an academic library, and supporting music students, staff, and faculty in a university teaching and research environment.
Please note, the successful candidate will be required to work on-site (campus).
