  4. Qualifications:

    • Suitable candidate(s) must be a graduate student, and preference will be given to those enrolled at the Faculty of Information, LIS Concentration;
    • Experience providing excellent customer service; engage with library users positively and respectfully, with an approachable and welcoming demeanor that helps build trust and encourages inclusive interactions.
    • Ability to work with diverse communities with respect, sensitivity, creativity, innovation, and cultural understanding; strong cultural competencies skills;
    • Motivated, showing initiative, willingness to learn and accept direction;
    • Ability to work independently and effectively as a member of a team;
    • Excellent work performance and attendance record;
    • Research skills and some experience with U of T Libraries online catalogue (LibrarySearch), databases and other tools preferred but not required;
    • Previous library, teaching, customer, or public service experience preferred;
    • Previous experience using Canva or other graphic design/visual communication tools and software preferred;
    • Science or engineering background preferred but not required.

  5. Duties:

    The Engineering & Computer Science Library supports the students, researchers, and Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering and the Department of Computer Science. We strive to deliver high quality content and collections and user-centered services and spaces- be they physical or digital – that ensure the continued success of all our users. Under librarian supervision, the graduate student library assistant will provide support to research services.
    Specific duties include:
    • Providing high quality research support on weekdays, evenings, and weekends, in person via the Research Help Desk, as well as via email and over the phone. Research support may also be delivered remotely in engineering and computer science courses;
    • Assisting users in identifying research needs, selecting appropriate resources, and navigating library catalogue and academic databases;
    • Independently staffing the ECSL during assigned evening/weekend shifts (opening and closing the library, covering other part time staff breaks, helping students, faculty, and staff at Research Help Desk);
    • Assisting with outreach activities and events in or outside the library
    • Other special projects (e.g., collections) as needed.
    The successful candidate is required to work onsite at the Engineering & Computer Science Library.

  6. Hours per Week:
    Hours per week will be determined based on availability and operational needs. The successful candidate must be able to work on weekends and evenings during the week. Schedule may change depending on the operational needs of each term.
